Kathryn began writing music for her grandson and her elementary students. Her pieces explore various moods and will capture the imagination of students in addition to developing their technical skills.
Kathryn’s solos and duets explore a range of harmonies and styles. They have a fresh sound and give the students a chance to continue to develop their pianistic skills.
Kathryn’s duet, Let’s Have Fun, was performed by twenty-six students on thirteen pianos at the MMTA Honors Concert held at the Convention Center in Minneapolis on June 1, 2019. The duet had been selected by the Minnesota Music Teachers Association for the event.
In the fall of 2019 Kathryn’s duet, A Day in Spain, was selected to be played at the 2020 Honors Concert. Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year her duet, At the Fair, was selected for the 2021 Honors Concert and her duet, Lazy Days, was selected for the 2023 Honors Concert.
In the spring of 2020 Kathryn’s intermediate piano solo, Gentle Rain, was chosen to be included on the MMTA Repertoire List for the 93rd Annual Piano Contest for 2021.
In the spring of 2022 Schmitt Music held its Spring Recital Workshop to showcase some of the best new music. Included were the piano duets, A Day in Spain and At the Fair, as well as the solos, A Sad Farewell, Takin' It Easy and Swan in the Mist.
